Baker Mayfield is the NFL's Next John Elway

Image
Oklahoma senior quarterback Baker Mayfield is on track to win the Heisman Trophy after a terrific outing against their 11th ranked rivals Oklahoma State in the annual "Bedlam" game where he threw for 598 yards, a school record, and scored 6 touchdowns. No player is having a better season then Mayfield who has guided his 5th ranked team to an 8-1 record while throwing for 3226 yards and scoring 32 touchdowns.      I was re-watching a favorite movie of mine this past week, Kevin Costner's Draft Day , and they talked about the scouting report for different all-time-great quarterbacks coming out of college, how they thought Manning didn't have the arm strength, Montana was too small, and Elway didn't throw a touch ball, and how those "weaknesses" never seemed to matter. As I watched the Bedlam game on Saturday afternoon, the same thought kept coming into my head as Mayfield kept escaping pressure from a porous offensive line, throwing balls sixty ...

Opinion: Joel Klatt Needs To Rethink Some Opinions

Image
As many football fans know, we have a lot of analysts that are just idiots on national TV when talking about sports, and we often times end up feeling like we could do a better job for free (sometimes, I know I'm doing a better job for free...). It's one of the most frustrating things in the world of sports journalism that with all of the competition in this field that we don't have the very best working on all of the networks.      You may recognize Joel Klatt. He's become a respected FOX Sports analyst and Play by Play commentator for FOX's College Football Game of the Week alongside Gus Johnson, and can call a tremendous game from the press box. He was a walk on quarterback at Colorado between 2002 and 2005, and won the starting job as a sophomore. So he knows the game of football and he can say some really good stuff.      One of the analysts I have the utmost respect for is FOX Sports Network Host Colin Cowherd. He is the host...

THROWBACK THURSDAY - Dak Prescott - The Road to Glory is Endured by Hardships

Image
(From Vogel's 2015 SEC Preview) Maybe the origins of a champion aren't always rich and glory filled roads full of success and dreams fulfilled. In the case of Dak Prescott, the senior quarterback at Mississippi State, a Heisman hopeful and 2014 First Team All SEC player, the road has been full of sorrow, challenges and hardships.  Prescott was born on July 29th, 1993, the youngest son of Peggy and Nathaniel Prescott. Shortly after his birth, Peggy and Nate broke up, divorcing in a full blown mess leaving Peggy to raise three boys on her own in Haughton, Louisiana. She moved her family into a trailer park and supported them on her wages at a truck stop.  Peggy had a love for football, so it was no surprise when her boys went out to play it. Jace, Dak's older brother, went on to play for Northwestern State as an offensive lineman.  Dak, however, became a star quarterback at Haughton High, listed by Rivals as a three star QB prospect, yet was lightly recrui...

FACTORS - Have the Miami Hurricanes Returned to Glory?

Image
Mark Richt has been a big name coach in college football for almost two decades now. After head coaching the Georgia Bulldogs for 15 seasons between 2001 and 2015, Richt was fired after a season of letdown from very high expectations and shortly thereafter hired by the University of Miami to be their next football coach. Richt took over a mess of a program, stumbling through decades of mediocrity, all the while trying to return to the glory days of the late 1980's and early 1990's.      Richt is now 16-4 as the head coach of Miami, and the Hurricanes are on a 12 game winning streak stretching back into last regular season, starting this season at 7-0. Going into this week, Miami has a chance to prove that they are for real, with a homecoming victory over Virginia Tech on November 4th.      A 7-0 start, filled with magical victories and last second scores to win, has everyone wondering if the Hurricanes are returning to their glory...

College Football Roundup Week 6 - Best & Worst Teams

Week six in college football shook up quite a few things and created some real speculation around the country. In this article, I want to review all of those shakeups and get you set for week seven coming up next week.  Biggest Upsets Upset's keep the college football world breathing and alive. Any given Saturday (Or now Thursday, Friday or Wednesday even) can result in an upset that sends a team reeling. ALL CAPS team is the home team. This week, my number one upset is Iowa State 38 OKLAHOMA 31 This was a real shocker for more then just one thing. Iowa State was on the road, facing off against a healthy Baker Mayfield who shredded their defense and would have put up an even bigger stat line (306 passing yards, 2 TDs, 57 rushing yards, 1 TD) had he not suffered from more then one drop by his receiving corps. The Cyclones 3rd String Quarterback entered the game in the 1st quarter, and threw for 343 yards and 3 TD's all the while looking as composed as a veteran st...

Opinion: Florida's Hope Lies in it's Wide Receivers

Image
The Florida Gators are now 2 time defending SEC East Champions, and have been demolished by the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game for the past 2 years now as well. With  that being said, last season was a lucky one for the Gators. After loosing to the Volunteers early in the season, the favorites to win the East at the time, Florida battled the odds to comeback and clinch the East division in their 16-10 win over LSU after some help from South Carolina. It was a 9-4 season, with losses to the Volunteers, Arkansas, Florida State and Alabama in the Championship game. The incumbent starting quarterback, Luke Del Rio, competes with 3 other quarterbacks for the starting job this season, and he isn't the favorite to win. Feleipe Franks, a redshirt freshman and Florida's prized recruit in the class of 2016, is the favorite to win the starting job. Standing at 6'6" and almost 220 lbs, Franks has very nice size and deep ball accuracy to compliment his ver...

The Potential of Shea Patterson

Image
Ole Miss currently faces some serious rule violation allegations from the NCAA, 21 of them in fact. From money-bribing players to recruiting issues, they are such terrible accusations that the Ole Miss athletic department decided to self impose a one year post season ban and give up 11 football scholarships over the next 3 years. Not one player has transfered out of Ole Miss because of these charges. Talk about loyalty to your program and to the Head Coach, Hugh Freeze. Last season for Ole Miss can be compared to rolling down a steep hill. You're rolling and tumbling down until you get to the point where your tumble is no longer controlled, but you are still rolling, and you can't stop. After a controlled tumble with close losses to Florida State and Alabama, Ole Miss fell out of control as they dropped 3 straight to Arkansas, LSU and Auburn, and then lost their starting quarterback, Chad Kelly, to a torn ACL. Enter Shea Patterson. Patterson was a redshirt freshman...

Opinion: Jake Bentley Holds The Keys To The Kingdom

Image
1st and 10, from the Black team's own 32 yard line. Jake Bentley stands in the shotgun after a solid 12 yard pickup by Rico Dowdle on an inside run up the gut. He scans the defense looking for a weakness, reading the coverage. The snap comes back, he makes a 3 step drop. The offensive line holds against the Garnett's first team defense coming to create pressure. Bentley looks right, and throws deep down the sideline. Kabam! There is Bryan Edwards catching a perfectly placed dime over the senior cornerback JaMarcus King and racing down the sideline untouched for 68 yards. Touchdown, Black team. If you, by any chance, aren't paying attention to what's going on in South Carolina, you need to look down south and see what Will Muschamp is doing. Featuring a very young offense led by a trio of true sophomores in Jake Bentley at quarterback, Rico Dowdle at half back, and Bryan Edwards at wide receiver, South Carolina threatens to be a force over the next couple seasons, ...

Is Jarrett Stidham the Next Big Thing at Auburn?

Image
Anyone who knows me, and my interests in sports, knows that in my opinion, there is no better football conference with more flair, more dramatics and more entertainment then the SEC. It's unpredictability make it a challenge for analysts like myself to cover, predict and report as any given Saturday can change the state of a football program. Any SEC team can win on any field, and it is simply the best and the most competitive conference in College Football. Spring Games are the beginning of a new season in college football. We get our first looks at the new faces joining our teams, the faces replacing the old who are gone and moved on, and the next set of stars shine on the field for the first time.  The Auburn Spring Game this season really intrigued me. With several early enrollees and a new transfer quarterback in Jarrett Stidham from Baylor, a sophomore with a cannon for an arm, making a run at the starting job on Sean White, last season's starter, it was a Spr...

Total Football Report College Football Awards 2016

I may not have trophies to give out to the players this year, but now that the regular season is over for anyone outside of the Big 12, I want to recognize a lot of very great football players across the nation this season. Trust me, this season there are a LOT of them too. There are going to be 4 sets of awards. 1. THE BEST OF THE BEST These are going to be Team awards given out to the teams that carried out their plans to the max. Overall- Alabama Crimson Tide 2. THE BEST INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS These are the Individual players who made history this year or even just played lights out. 3. THE BEST NON POWER 5 Yes, I wanted to make sure some non-power 5 conference players got recognized and not overlooked. 4. ALL-TEAM SQUADS The last section will be coming forth. All of these different things will be in articles to make it easier for people to access, and me to label. Here was your warning.

How Big is the BIG 10?

There are currently 4 BIG 10 Teams in the Top 10 of the College Football Playoff Rankings (2.Ohio State, 3.Michigan, 6.Wisconsin and 7.Penn State), and everyone on ESPN and other sports nations are buzzing about the "Dominance" of the Big 10 Conference. You know, that right there is up for discussion, because the SEC still has the best win-loss percentage out of the 11 conferences. But what's not up for debate is the fact that the BIG 10 has 14 schools. Really, guys, how big is the BIG 10? When the BIG 10 was founded, 10 schools (Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Michigan State, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, and Northwestern) came together and vowed to create the biggest conference in the Nation. Thus, they have since added 4 teams in, and divided themselves into 2 conferences, East and West. So if there are 14 teams in the Conference now, shouldn't we call it the BIG 14? You know, they should have come up with some sort of better name in...

Thanksgiving Day Football - NCAA Edition

So the NFL annually plays 3 games spanned throughout Thanksgiving Thursday to provide us with football to watch on the most thankful day of the year. But, let's face it. Who wants to watch the pros go at it when we have great College Football on to entertain us? This year is interesting. Two teams who previously were ranked in the Top 5 earlier in the season and have now fallen from the Top 25 with disappointing losses, face off against each other at 7:30 ET on ESPN. Folks, it's LSU at Texas A&M, and exciting match-up for their season finales. Both coaches will be scrambling for their jobs in this game. Kevin Sumlin is now completing his 5th year at Texas A&M with no championship ring to show for it. Every year, Texas A&M builds a big hype around their team only to fall short at the most crucial moments of the season. And so, whether many people realize it or not, Sumlins job is on the line with people like Tom Herman floating around as a possible sign on to head ...

Campaigning For The Heisman - Baker Mayfield

In Oklahoma, things are said and done a different way then they are in the northeast. Back in the rough and tumble days of the state, if you had a problem with someone, you settled it like gentlemen. You had a duel. Baker Mayfield is a complete Oklahoma Gentleman quarterback, and he's probably the best too. His first duel was against the incumbent starter Trevor Knight before the 2015 season, as a Transfer student from Texas Tech. Mayfield had transfered out and sat for a full year due to eligibility restrictions, and he had a problem with Knight- He wanted that starting job. Knight fought him for it but couldn't hang on, and Mayfield took Oklahoma to the Final 4, before getting beat in a duel with Deshaun Watson and the Clemson Tigers. This season, Mayfield has stuck to dueling with opposing QB's then teammates, and won some impressive battles. That 61-55 adventure over his alma mater Texas Tech, who views him as a traitor, saw him fire back over and over, while compiling...

College Playoff Commitee's Top 25 Rankings 11 15 2016

Whoa whoa whoa whoa, what?!?! After a weekend of utter chaos, where the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ranked teams all took losses to teams that they shouldn't have, and the analysts all reported a shakeup in the top 4, we got... Musical Chairs? Well, almost. The latest top 25 rankings were a little bit disappointing for Louisville fans and anyone who wants to call the Big 12 or Pac 12 dominant, but there were quite some interesting revelations. FINAL 4 #1. Alabama Crimson Tide VS #4 Clemson Tigers With all of the close games Clemson has played to teams they should have destroyed (Ahem, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, TROY), I don't understand why Louisville can't be ranked ahead of Clemson. If you watch the Louisville/Clemson game, you will see a lot of iffy calls, rough cheap play from Clemson and a few other interesting things and, oh yes... That will be upcoming soon in an article. In otherwords, Clemson is 9-1, just lost to a Pittsburgh team who can't play defense, Watso...
